Leader Reports Pipe Manufacturer Granted Abatement for Expansion in Pekin

From the Salem Leader:

A New Albany-based pipe manufacturing business has plans to expand its operation to Pekin, creating 10 new jobs.

Sabrina Burdine, with the Washington County Growth Partnership, met with the Washington County Council on Monday, seeking a tax abatement for Globe Industrial. The five-year abatement, which the county council granted, is for equipment with an estimated value of $250,000.

Burdine said she and Marlin Andres, president of the company, recently met with the Pekin Town Board, which also granted an abatement. She said the company manufactures steel pipe and plans to locate on property that had been the home of Burnett Welding on South Voyles Road as well as on property that had been the site of Saroyan.

Burdine said Andres has acquired 56 acres total on both sides of Voyles Road, including the Cutter property next to the railroad tracks.

Gary Nale, Pekin town manager, said the town board granted a $500,000 abatement on both real estate and equipment for the manufacturing facility on the Saroyan site, which is inside the town limits. Property on the other side of the road is actually outside the town.

"I think it's going to be good for the town," Nale said. "We need some jobs that we've lost."
