From the Muncie Star-Press:
The Delaware County Election Board on Tuesday heard testimony about a Democratic poll worker’s allegations that one of her Republican counterparts interfered with voters in last month’s referendum.
Megan Quirk, a Democratic Party official at the Mansfield Park polling site — for the Nov. 5 vote on a Muncie Community School Corp. request for a tax increase — said Republican Fred Wilkins told voters to cast “no” votes “if you want your taxes lowered.”
The local attorney told the board — Republican Will Statom, Democrat Denise Moore and Delaware County Clerk Steve Craycraft — that Moore’s actions that day, and during the 2012 general election, when he reportedly offered fellow poll workers anti-Barack Obama DVDs at the voting site, violated several provisions of state election law.
“This is not an issue of someone having a different opinion of myself,” Quirk said, adding that voters are “entitled to essentially be left alone.”
Wilkins said the accounts of his conduct were “stretched to the utmost.”
“I tried not to influence anybody, other than to show them how to run the (voting) machine,” he said.
Quirk presented affidavits from two voters who recounted comments on the referendum that Wilkins allegedly made to them as they prepared to vote. Her complaint was ultimately tabled pending further investigation by the board.
Two other poll workers testified Tuesday they did not hear Wilkins make inappropriate comments to voters. They acknowledged they were not closely monitoring his activities during what proved to be a hectic day at the polling site.
