After Referendum Passes, Zionsville School Board Reverses Teacher Layoff Plans

From the Indianapolis Star:

After voters approved a school tax referendum last week, the Zionsville School Board is making good on a plan to cancel teacher layoffs -- and now they plan hire 26 more teachers.

The school board agreed on a plan this week to hire those teachers this fall in an effort to reverse the trend of growing class sizes and to restore some program cuts that had resulted from previous teacher layoffs.

On May 8, about 57 percent of local voters approved an increase in their school tax designed to plug a $2.5 million budget gap. The vote increased the local school tax to 24.44 cents per $100 of assessed value -- which school officials say will add up to about $239 extra per year for a $200,000 home.

The new referendum-generated tax revenue won't be collected until the spring of 2013, so the board voted to draw $1.9 million out of the Rainy Day Fund in order to start the hiring process.
