Council Proposes Lowering Wheel Tax but Increasing Property Tax in Union County

From the Richmond Palladium-Item:

Wheel taxes will drop next year for some Union County drivers, but property taxes might increase if the Union County Council approves a proposed tax rate hike.

The council Thursday agreed the $40 charged for all trailers was too high for small trailers weighing 3,000 to 5,000 pounds.

The council cut in half the local tax for small trailers that's spent only on road materials.

Owners of smaller trailers will pay $20 a year in road taxes, after some residents complained about the higher fee.

The lower fee will be in effect when trailers' license plates are purchased or renewed in 2013.

The county can't raise the fee for larger trailers because it's already at the legal maximum of $40.

The council also scheduled a public hearing for 7:30 p.m. June 12 in the courtroom to consider raising the Cumulative Capital Fund tax rate.

The proposed increase of 1.5 cents per $100 of assessed property value would put the fund's tax rate at 3.3 cents per $100 assessed value, the maximum allowed.

The higher tax rate would collect about $101,000 annually, nearly double what's collected now.

Property taxes on a home with an assessed value of $100,000 could increase by $33 a year if the tax increase is approved.
