The company will add about 40,000 square feet, an 8 percent increase in space. Construction, which began this month, is expected to account for about $4 million of the total project cost. Equipment accounts for the remainder.

Nucor Fastener now employs about 250 at the plant, which opened in 1986. Hiring has already begun for the new positions, which include electricians, tool-and-die technicians, mechanics and machine operators, McCoy said.

Wages will average $28 an hour, including production bonuses, he said.

Abatements from county officials will allow the company to save $2.7 million in real estate taxes and $5.9 million in taxes on equipment, said Ken McCrory, executive director of the DeKalb County Economic Development Partnership.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. also has offered Nucor Fastener up to $200,000 in conditional tax credits and up to $100,000 in training grants on the project.
