Election officials remind town residents if they aren't yet registered to vote, they only have a few days left to apply to cast a ballot in next month's school referendum.
Michelle Fajman, Lake County elections director, said the deadline to register to vote is Monday.
She said those wishing to register in person can visit the county elections board offices, 2293 N. Main St., Crown Point.
Those wishing to register by mail can obtain an official registration form on the county's election website at http://www.lakecountyin.org. and mail it to the elections office. It will be honored if it has a postmark no later than Monday's date.
The referendum is May 7. Officials of the School Town of Munster are asking registered voters living in Munster to raise taxes 19.9 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. They said this is needed to prevent significant cutbacks in school operations.
Fajman said her office already has mailed a dozen absentee ballots to town residents and received back four completed ballots. She said mail-in ballots will be accepted through April 29.
Voters may cast early ballots in person beginning at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the elections board offices and continue from 8:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Saturday hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27 and May 4.
Early voting also will be offered in Munster beginning at 10 a.m. April 22 at Munster Town Hall, 1005 Ridge Road. Early voting hours in Munster will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Saturday voting hours are 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 27 and May 4.
Early voting will end at noon May 6 at both locations. Voting hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 7.
