Indiana Gov. Mike Pence made his first appearance in Wayne County since being elected during Saturday’s Lincoln Day Dinner, vowing to continue efforts to cut the state’s income tax 10 percent even as he pledged added funds for schools and roads.
...
Pence, in a 15-minute speech at Forest Hills Country Club that preceded a dinner and a speech by Secretary of State Connie Lawson, touted the budget surplus left by the Mitch Daniels administration and said it was “Indiana’s moment” before giving a “fly-by” of his vision for the next four years.
“If we will remain bold ... our state will take our rightful place as the leading state in the Midwest in one of the fastest-growing state economies in the United States of America,” Pence said. “That’s our opportunity.”
Pence promised the estimated 170 Republicans in his audience he would push lawmakers to pass a 10-percent income tax cut for all Hoosiers, noting the state was experiencing the “largest surplus” in history.
Among his other priorities, he said, was to pass an “honestly balanced budget that lives within our means and protects the public reserves,” adding he would invest in education after his predecessor made cuts to secondary and higher education.
“We can make investments in our education establishment after some years of difficulty, and since I believe roads mean jobs, we’re going to find resources to invest in our roads across this state and in communities across this state,” he said to roaring applause.
Pence said Indiana faces challenging times, including 8.7 percent unemployment and 22 percent of Hoosier children living in poverty.
“I want you to know that we’re going to work our hearts out every day for the next four years,” added his goal “to build this state from good to great.”
