Tribune Reports Howard County Collects $46.3 Million in Property Taxes

From the Kokomo Tribune:

More than $46.3 million in real and personal property taxes were paid by Howard County residential and business property owners during the spring tax collections.

Treasurer Ann Wells reported 96.36 percent of the taxes due on May 10 were collected by her office for distribution to the local taxing units.

Of the $26.9 million due in real estate property taxes, the treasurer’s office collected $25.8 million or 95.6 percent. A total of $15.4 million in personal property taxes were received or 97 percent of the $15.9 million owed.

Wells said many property owners also paid the fall installment of the taxes owed, which are due on Nov. 11.

The treasurer’s office received $3.1 million, or 11.5 percent, of the $26.9 million in real estate taxes due in the fall. The office collected $2 million or 12.7 percent of the $15.8 million in personal property taxes owed in November.

“The collections were about average for the county,” Wells said. “The amount of taxes owed this year is down slightly because of a decline in the assessed value of property in the county.”

The highest percentage of real property taxes paid was in Howard Township-Kokomo with 99.95 percent of the taxes collected. Center Township-Kokomo was the lowest percentage paid at 92.1 percent.

Last year, the county collected $50.5 million in real and personal property taxes in the spring.
Wells said Delphi Electronics & Safety, General Motors Holding Corp. and Chrysler Group LLC are all paying the current taxes that are owed and making the prior year tax payments as spelled out in settlement agreements with the county, as the companies emerged from bankruptcy.
