Madison Courier Reports Treasurer Takes Blame for Incorrect Tax Bills in Jefferson County

From the Madison Courier:

Treasurer Linda Greene on Thursday said she was responsible for a mistake that resulted in Jefferson County residents receiving incorrect property tax bills last week.

Greene said she was able to trace back the steps to her office after speaking with L&D Mail Masters of New Albany, the company that prints and mails the tax statements, and the county's IT director.

"It was my error, and I would really appreciate it if you would let the public know that it was not (L&D)," she said.

The correct property tax bills will be reprinted and sent to Jefferson County residents today.

Diane Fischer, president of L & D Mail Masters, Inc., said the company's employees have been working with the Treasurer Office to get the corrected tax statements processed and mailed as quickly as possible.

Greene told the County Council on Tuesday that she was certain her office had approved the correct bills before they were printed. That was the case, she said Thursday, but added that the error came later in the process.

She said about 10 days before the first mailing, the treasurer's office approved a hard copy of the invoices for the 2013 billing. But when the company later requested that a new file be sent for printing, Greene said she mistakenly sent the wrong tax bills.

Greene said she appreciated that the company was working quickly to help resolve the issue because residents must receive their property tax bills by April 20. The due date is May 10.

The correct bills are on white paper and have yellow highlights. The incorrect bills, which have blue highlights, should be destroyed, Greene said.
