School leaders in the Metropolitan School District of Boone Township hope to have more success with a general fund referendum than they did a year ago.
The Board of School Trustees will meet in a special session at 6 p.m. Tuesday to vote on a resolution to place a referendum on the May 6 ballot to adopt a referendum tax levy.
Last May, the district asked voters to approve a referendum seeking an additional $530,000 a year for seven years. The request, to raise property tax payments by 23 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, failed by four votes.
There could be different terms proposed at the meeting Tuesday, said School Board attorney Tara Tauber.
There also has been some question by the Porter County Election Board whether the school district can hold the referendum vote May 6 because it falls one day short of the legal requirement to wait one year before holding another ballot referendum.
Tauber said Monday she is working with the Porter County Election Board to resolve the issue.
"We believe that it can be on the ballot May 6," she said Monday. "We have received an informal opinion from the State Election Board, but the Porter County Election Board wants to be absolutely certain because of the change in the law."
After the referendum failed last year, Boone Township Superintendent George Letz implemented several cost-cutting measures including eliminating six teachers -- four teachers at the high school, one at middle school and another at the elementary level.
