Herald-Argus Reports La Porte County Plans to Mail Tax Bills Monday

From the La Porte Herald-Argus:

La Porte County officials are hoping for the tax situation to be caught up by spring.

"As soon as the 2013 pay 2014 tax bills come out, we will be caught up," said La Porte county Auditor Joie Winski. "Hopefully they will be sent out in June or this spring."

Winski said this will result in La Porte County having a normal tax billing cycle after five years. She said the 2013 pay 2014 tax bill will have a spring and fall payment due date.

Winski, as well as La Porte County Treasurer Nancy Hawkins and La Porte County Assessor Mike Schultz, announced the 2012 pay 2013 tax bills will be mailed on Monday.

According to a press release, the bill will contain one annual amount in an effort to achieve a normal tax bill cycle. The due date will be March 14, however, taxpayers will be given a six-month extension until August 26 to pay their bills.

Today was the last day for taxpayers to pay their 2011 pay 2012 tax bill.

Hawkins said in an effort to not place a financial hardship on any property owner, her office is willing to work with taxpayers who need to make payment arrangements. Payment options are listed on the back of the bills.

Those properties with delinquent or unpaid taxes as of December 31, 2008, could possibly be subject to a County Tax Sale in the near future.

Taxpayers with pending or resolved appeals should come into the Auditor's Office at 555 Michigan Ave. in La Porte or call the Auditor's Office at (219) 326-6808 Ext. 2221 or 2536.
