Star Reports Senate Committee Likely to Put Brakes on Plan to Expand Transit in Central Indiana

From the Indianapolis Star:

Indiana state senators today likely will put the brakes on a plan to expand Central Indiana’s mass transit.
The Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee will vote on an amendment this morning to send House Bill 1011 to a study summer committee. The full Senate likely will vote on the bill next week.

Senators are concerned about the costs and scope of a proposal the House approved with bipartisan support Feb. 25.

The legislation the House approved would have allowed residents to decide through a referendum whether to raise their income taxes by up to 0.3 percent to pay for most of the local portion of a 10-year, $1.3 billion transit expansion. That tax would amount to roughly $10 to $15 per month for the average worker and would pay for most of the roughly $700 million local share.

If the Senate passes a bill, House and Senate lawmakers would debate a final version in the final weeks of the session, which ends April 29. It’s unclear yet whether there can be a compromise with both sides far apart.
