The Indiana Chapter of Americans for Prosperity released a poll today that shows slightly more than half of Hoosiers believe Indiana’ surplus should be returned to taxpayers in the form of relief.
The conservative group says the poll is further evidence that Hoosiers want substantial tax relief and prefer Gov. Mike Pence’s state budget proposal, which includes a 10-percent income tax cut, over other options.
For weeks, the group has been running an advertising and marketing campaign in support of Pence’s proposed 10-percent cut to individual income taxes, which has received a lukewarm reception in the state legislature.
The Indiana House’s budget proposed no cut to individual income taxes, though it does phase out the inheritance tax over several years. The Indiana Senate’s budget proposal proposes a 3 percent cut to individual income taxes, and eliminates the inheritance tax this year.
The Americans for Propserity poll was conducted by Public Opinion Strategies, a public affairs research firm. The group said the poll of 500 likely Hoosier voters was conducted April 7 and 8 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.38 percent.
Among the poll’s findings:
• 52 percent of those polled (64 percent of Republicans and 54 percent of independents) said returning Indiana's budget surplus to taxpayers was the best use of the money.
• 46 percent of respondents favored Pence’s budget proposal, compared to 20 percent for the House’s version of the budget and 19 percent for the Senate’s budget. Of that 53 percent of independents, 41 percent of Democrats, and 49 percent of Republicans favor Pence’s budget over the alternatives
• 65 percent of likely voters, and 81 percent of Republicans, approve of the job Pence is doing as governor.
• 54 percent of voters say Pence’s budget will have a positive influence on them or their family.
