Times: Hammond Sanitary District Owes Munster Sewer Fund $2 Million in Shared Property Taxes

From the Northwest Indiana Times:

The Hammond Sanitary District still owes Munster’s sewer fund almost $2 million in shared property taxes, according to Town Manager Tom DeGiulio.

To pay several expenditures related to the flood control measures billed to the sewer fund, the Munster Town Council had to transfer more than $144,000 in expenditures from the sewer fund to the gaming fund at Monday's meeting.

“We don’t want to carry bills into the next year,” DeGiulio said.

Munster Clerk-Treasurer David Shafer told the council that the Hammond Sanitary District received its latest property tax settlement from Lake County on Dec. 27.

There’s been no communication between Munster and the Hammond Sanitary District on the matter, DeGiulio said.

Some of that nearly $2 million owed to Munster dates back to 2011, Shafer said.

“We might not even receive it,” he told the council.

It cost $144,163.20 to install generators at two pumping stations and rip-rap along Timberwood Lane in White Oak Estates.

Bills totaled $52,867 for concrete pads for generators at the Fisher Street and Calumet Avenue pump stations. Another $22, 096.20 in invoices was for the electrical hookup of a Calumet Avenue pump station generator.

The remaining $69,200 was to install rip-rap, which is rock or other material that helps shore up waterway banks or prevent water erosion.

DeGiulio said the gaming fund will be reimbursed when the money due from the Hammond Sanitary District is received.
