The Indiana Department of Revenue is implementing a new screening system this tax season intended to protect Hoosiers from possible identity fraud.
The agency says it will use LexisNexis' automated verification services to help confirm the identities of all Indiana taxpayers receiving a 2014 refund.
Department Commissioner Mike Alley says he expects that more than 90 percent of all Indiana tax returns will be verified through the LexisNexis process.
Alley says the agency is "dedicated to protecting taxpayers' identities while preventing refunds from being sent to identity criminals."
The Justice Department says more Americans' identities were stolen in tax refund crimes in the first six months of 2013 than in all of 2012. Such thefts resulted in nearly $25 billion in financial losses in 2012.
