News-Sentinel Reports Excise Tax Credit Available for Veterans

From the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel:

Veterans with a service-connected disability who do not own property are now eligible to receive a tax credit on their vehicle’ excise tax.

A state law was enacted last year to allow veterans to obtain an affidavit from their County Auditor stating they do not own property to which a property tax deduction can be applied. The veteran should then take the affidavit to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles to receive the tax credit when renewing their license plates for 2014.

The excise tax credit is equal to the lesser of the excise tax due for the specific vehicle or $70, and can be applied to two vehicles owned by the veteran. The new excise tax credit is also available to the surviving spouse of a disabled veteran, County Auditor Tera Klutz said.

For more information on the new excise tax credit, contact the Auditor’s office at acauditor@allencounty.us or by telephone at (260) 449-7241. The office is on the first floor of the Rousseau Centre and is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
