It’s nearly crunchtime for Vanderburgh County government.
The county’s budget this year spends $2 million more than it has. For six months officials have scrambled for ways to carve that $2 million out of their operating costs, from offices that they say are already thoroughly picked over.
So far, the County Council has cut between $400,000 and $500,000 by not filling vacant positions and looking for money in other accounts. But, with only six more months before their main account is in the red, they’re considering more drastic moves.
“We have to look deep,” said County Council President Tom Shetler.
On the horizon could be layoffs, office consolidations and reorganizations, and cheaper insurance programs.
