Greenwood wants to annex land near a planned interstate exit and is breaking away from how the city has made annexation deals in the past.
The city plans to annex the 1,800 acres, including more than 100 properties, near Interstate 65 where a new interchange is to be built at Worthsville Road.
Due to a change in state law, Greenwood officials said the city can’t offer the typical 10-year tax breaks offered in the past when negotiating with residents to be included in an annexation. Instead, the city is offering a deal that would phase in city taxes over four years, but only if 51 percent or more of landowners sign a waiver saying they won’t fight the annexation.
