The president of the LaPorte County Board of Commissioners is being criticized for not paying his tax bill on time.
Mike Bohacek, a Republican who was defeated by present commission president Willie Milsap, a Democrat, in 2010 and is challenging him again in this November's election, said he learned that Milsap owed $574 in delinquent taxes and late fees on bills issued in 2011 and 2013 on his Michigan City home, according to the LaPorte County treasurer's office.
Due to the lengthy delay in completing the countywide reassessment, Milsap's 2011 bill was not due until Feb. 21 of this year; the deadline to pay his 2013 tab was May 12, according to the county treasurer's office.
Bohacek said the issue was brought to his attention by a resident and he reported it to the LaPorte County Council on June 23. Milsap paid the debt the next day.
