Herald-Argus Reports Rep Dermody Details Success in Town Meetings

From the LaPorte Herald-Argus:

Bills helping to make higher education more affordable, fixing La Porte County's property tax situation and giving homeowners a way out of historic designation districts were among the successes of this year's legislative session, said Rep. Tom Dermody, R-La Porte, during a series of town hall meetings on Saturday.

More meetings are scheduled for tonight.

"It was a good year for La Porte County," Dermody said at the Union Mills Conservation Club after previous talks in Wanatah and LaCrosse.

Another bill was House Bill 1261, which he said will be instrumental in finally solving the county-wide tax situation. Previous stories in The Herald-Argus detailed how the bill will allow 2013 property tax bill distributions to be delayed until the fall, when residents will be given one bill for the whole year instead of two, as is usually done, so the county can finally start releasing real tax bills on time instead of provisionals.

The bill also allows residents a six-month extension on property tax payments.

He also said Senate Bill 4 (whose House version he supported) will finally give residents a process to leave their historic preservation districts. There were never any written rules to do so before.
