For the first time since 2006, more than 80,000 current property tax bills will be going out Friday in LaPorte County on time.
Billing was delayed all these years because of a countywide reassessment being challenged, forcing local schools and municipalities to operate on estimated budgets and borrowed funds.
"People should start getting them in the mail on Saturday," said LaPorte County Treasurer Nancy Hawkins.
Property owners had been receiving estimated bills while the reassessment was under a long appeal.
The estimated billings continued for a short time after the reassessment was finally certified in 2010 to give the county time to go back and convert the estimated billing figures into official ones.
Bills for 2013 were sent out in February and property owners have until Aug. 26 to make those payments due to a six-month extension, Hawkins said.
She said two extra part-time workers were hired and current staff members in the offices of the treasurer, auditor and assessor worked quicker and racked up overtime to get the billing caught up.
"They worked late. They worked weekends. They worked nights," said Hawkins.
