Herald-Angus Reports "End May be in Sight for Property Tax Mess" in LaPorte

From the LaPorte Herald-Angus:

A bill allowing the release of real property taxes in La Porte County and an end to the county-wide property tax situation has cleared the state House and is now on its way to the Senate.

In an interview yesterday, Representative Tom Dermody (R-La Porte), said House Bill 1261, which he authored, will give county officials the ability to send residents their first real tax bill in six years, a provision not normally allowed this late in the tax cycle.

In a January interview, La Porte County Treasurer Nancy Hawkins said county officials are not expected to complete their assessments by April 1, which is required if the county does not want to send out another provisional tax bill. But she said the county can still get a real tax bill out later this year if the state makes an exception.

Residents would also be getting only one real tax bill this year instead of two.

Dermody said the bill will also let the La Porte County Council extend payment time since county residents have to pay multiple provisional and reconciled tax bills. If approved, residents will have six months to pay their bills.

The council approved a similar extension last year.

According to a press release from Dermody's office, the bill will authorize the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance to delay the payment of tax bills imposed for the March 1, 2012, or Jan. 15, 2013, assessment dates. In addition, the bill creates a 2 percent discount for those paying their property taxes on time. If payments are not met in the allotted time, the bill creates an additional 12 month period before properties can go up for public auction.
