From the Northwest Indiana Times:
The deadline is Tuesday for Lake property owners to appeal if they think their new property tax assessment is too high.
"I'm afraid people are going to be confused and wait until their tax bill, which will be too late," Lake County Assessor Hank Adams said Monday.
He said in past years, property owners were allowed to wait until the first installment of their property tax bill to complain their property was being value at a higher price than its true market value.
Lake County just finished a general reassessment of more than 248,000 real estate parcels to update the assessments so they include new construction or match any other changes that took place since the last reassessment several years ago.
The county sent out notices, called Form 11s, at the beginning of the year to owners that state the new assessments and warn the owners to notify their nearest assessors within 45 days if they disagree with the changes.
Adams said his office already has received more than than 1,500 such appeals this year, but the time to appeal will be up Tuesday, Adams warned.
Those living in Crown Point south of 101st Avenue, in Cedar Lake east of Cline Avenue and unincorporated Center Township can appeal at the Center Township assessor's office, 213 S. Court St., Crown Point.
Those living in Hobart, Lake Station, New Chicago and unincorporated Hobart Township can appeal to the Hobart Township assessor's office, 1461 S. Lake Park Ave., Hobart.
Those living in Merrillville, in Crown Point north of 101st Avenue and unincorporated Ross Township can appeal at the Ross Township assessor's office, 7870 Broadway, Suite C, Merrillville.
Those living in Dyer, St. John, Schererville and unincorporated St. John Township can appeal at the St. John Township assessor's office, 9157 Wicker Ave., St. John.
The rest of Lake County property owners can mail appeals to his office at 2293 N. Main St., Crown Point.
