Herald-Times Reports Monroe County Property Tax Bills Expected to be Timely

From the Bloomington Herald-Times:

Monroe County is on track to have tax bills mailed out in time to be returned by May 10.

Monroe County’s 2013 tax rates and budget order were recently certified by the Department of Local Government Finance, according to a news release.

Monroe County Auditor Steve Saulter said that next, his office will submit an abstract with tax rates for each township in the county to the state no later than March 15. After the state approves the rates, the abstract will be sent to back to the county, and the county should mail bills to taxpayers no later than April 25.

Hans Huffman, chief deputy in the Monroe County Treasurer’s Office, said that he could foresee no problem in meeting that deadline.

“April 25 would actually be a little late for us,” he said. “We try to send them out as quickly as we can.”

The department is working to update addresses and take care of other items right now in order to be prepared to get bills to taxpayers in a timely manner, Huffman said.

Monroe is the 54th county to have its budget order and tax rates approved by the DLGF. It submitted property assessments and certified net assessed values to the state last summer.

An an appeal for an excess tax levy to make up for a clerical error was not approved and will not be included in this year’s taxes. The mistake cost the county government $120,600 last year.
