Herald-Times Reports Monroe Auditor Still Seeking Homestead Exemption Updates

From the Bloomington Herald-Times:

The Monroe County auditor’s office has posted on its website a list of property owners who have not updated their homestead exemption information.  The office is asking residents to visit the auditor’s section of www.co.monroe.in.us, and click on the link on the left side of the page called “Homestead Deduction/Verification Flag Listing.”  If their name is listed, residents should come by the auditor’s office to update their information, said Therese Chambers, chief deputy auditor.  For the past three tax seasons, those claiming a homestead exemption have been asked to update their personal information with local auditors.  The state of Indiana is using the data to compile a statewide database to prevent people from claiming multiple homestead exemptions.  As of Friday, 2,781 people had failed to update their information in Monroe County.  Monroe County Auditor Steve Saulter has the authority to remove the homestead exemption for property owners who failed to update their information by January 2013.  However, Saulter said he wants to make sure that residents understand that they have to update their information before he removes their exemptions.  Staff in the auditor’s office have been calling people since February and have managed to round-up about 300 forms so far.
