Sun Commercial Reports Knox County Council Hears Public Views on Wheel Tax

The county council held a sort of impromptu public hearing on the wheel tax during its meeting Tuesday at the Vincennes Fortnightly Clubhouse, 421 N. Sixth St., with speakers coming forward both in favor of and against the levy.

Commissioner Larry Holscher said that in adopting the tax the commissioners were seeking a long-term solution to a lack of money to properly care for the county’s roads and bridges.

He said there was a great deal of misunderstanding about the tax from what he called the “monsters-under-the-bed syndrome.”

Holscher said at $25 per vehicle and trailer the county would generate about $1 million for road repairs plus be eligible for additional state money.


Just over half of the state’s counties have the wheel tax, including Sullivan, Greene, Daviess and Gibson counties in the area.

The commissioners want to have an extended discussion about the tax, running through the end of the year, Holscher said, with their hope of implementing it just as the special Economic Development Income Tax to pay for the new jail expires at the beginning of 2015.
