Star Reports Greenwood Council Will Ask State for Authority to Levy Restaurant Tax

From the Indianapolis Star:

The Greenwood City Council voted 7-1-1 in favor of a measure that could pave the way for a 1 percent restaurant tax.

The council approved its final vote on a resolution asking state lawmakers to give city leaders the authority to levy the food and beverage tax, which could bring in about $700,000 a year.

Council members Ron Bates voted no and Bruce Armstrong voted present.

“There are other ways to fund whatever additional need the city may encounter,” Bates said. “Let’s give our businesses here in Greenwood a break. They deserve it.”

Restaurant owners have urged the council to oppose the measure, however no one from the public spoke at Monday night’s council meeting.

In an email to The Star, Christian Maslowski, president of the Greater Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, cautioned officials to weigh the consequences.

“Locally, the accommodations and food service industry is the fifth-largest employment sector in the Greenwood area,” Maslowski said.

“I hope they (city leaders) conduct careful conversation with the restaurant industry to understand how the new tax might change consumer behaviors,” Maslowski said. “No one wants to see employees’ hours reduced if sales slip.”
