From the Shelbyville News:
The Shelbyville Common Council heard positive news from five companies giving updates on their tax abatements.
The council voted 5-0, minus members Brian Asher, R-At large, and Rob Nolley, R-Ward 3, to find the companies in compliance with the conditions of their abatements.
Representatives from Drilling World, 860 Elston Drive; Atlas Cold Storage, 4301 N. 125W; Makuta Technics, 2155 Intelliplex Drive; Yushiro Manufacturing, 783 W. Mausoleum Road; and Triumph Fabrications, 850 Elston Drive, each appeared at the meeting. Each had requested relief from part of their tax bill for new buildings or new equipment at some point in the past.
"We're up 54 percent," said Stu Kaplan, of Makuta Technics, of the company's workload.
Kaplan said the company was producing plastic parts for Canon printer cartridges, parts for diabetes pumps and plastic parts for several other products.
He said that while employment at the company has stayed more or less the same in the past six years, many of the employees are now from Shelby County and that he's recruited heavily from local Jobs for America's Graduates high school programs.
Local attorney Steve Schrumpf spoke for Yushiro Manufacturing, commonly called YUMA, a metal working company.
"Things are looking up for them," he said.
He said the business is small but profitable. There has been zero turnover in the company, he said, and it has no long-term debt.
