Editorial Calls for State to Resist Expanding Gambling to Make up for Declining Gaming Tax Revenue

Though Fort Wayne’s reaction to the possibility of a casino here has been divisively mixed, any effort to expand casino gambling would likely include the state’s second-largest city. Again, the temptation for quick cash – a casino would be a short-term economic boon – could bring numerous local officials on board.

But officials would do Hoosiers a disservice by desperately trying to hold onto gambling revenue. Adding more Indiana casinos would largely siphon away customers from other Indiana casinos. A Fort Wayne casino, for example, would likely reduce revenue at casinos in Michigan City and Anderson. And with competition from other states increasing, relying on gambling to finance a major portion of state government will be increasingly irresponsible.

Lawmakers and state officials took a good first step in adopting a two-year budget that forecasts a significant reduction in gambling revenue. Additional reductions are likely, and Hoosiers should expect either state spending cuts or tax increases – or a combination of both.
