IPS Board Approves Layoffs to Cut $27 Million from Budget

From the Indianapolis Star:

The Indianapolis Public Schools board approved 163 layoffs today, including 94 teachers.

The move was part of a plan announced last week to cut an additional $27 million from next school year's budget, driven primarily by the removal of four schools from IPS under state takeover.

The vast majority of the layoffs were at those schools.

As many as 262 jobs initially were in danger, according to Ann Wilkins, president of the district’s teachers union.

Donnan Middle School, Howe Community High School and Manual High School will be run independently next year by the Florida-based Charter Schools USA. Arlington Community High School will be managed by EdPower, an Indianapolis-based nonprofit.

The four schools were notified last year that they would be subject to state takeover after six consecutive years of F ratings by the state for poor performance and a lack of gains on state tests.

Some teachers at the takeover schools have been offered jobs at other IPS sites, and some have accepted positions with the takeover organizations to stay with those schools next year.
