NWI Reports Gary Council Formalizes Support for County Income Tax

From the Northwest Indiana Times:

The Gary City Council passed a resolution Tuesday in support of a local option income tax in Lake County.
In the resolution, the council urges the Lake County Council and the Lake County Board of Commissioners to pass a local option income tax at the highest amount authorized by the state. The resolution also asks that the proceeds from the tax be divided among the cities, by population or the method that provides the maximum tax revenue to Gary.
According to council President Kyle Allen, a local option income tax is used to wean local government from dependency on property taxes.
“Although many people question whether or not we will get funds in return for passing this resolution, I see it benefiting all in the long run,” said Allen. “Any funds we do receive will go to public safety because that is our biggest opportunity in the city of Gary.”
