Chronicle-Tribune Reports Huntington County Considering Wheel Tax

From the Grant County Chronicle Tribune:

Huntington County is considering implementing a surtax and a wheel tax for all vehicles registered in the county after the state legislature proposed freezing road subsidies at 2013 levels for counties that do not implement the tax.

The proposed freeze is one small part of House Bill 1001, also known as the state’s biennial budget. If this part of the budget is passed, highway account distributions to counties, as well as cities and towns in those counties, will be frozen at 2013 levels unless the county adopts a county-wide motor vehicle excise surtax and wheel tax, and that tax is adopted at a rate that is at least half the maximum rate allowed.
