NWI Reports Lake County Rakes in $3 Million During Three Day Tax Sale

From the Northwest Indiana Times:

The Lake County commissioners' spring tax sale closed Thursday after raking in $3,046,500 during three days.

Lake County Attorney John Dull said the money came from the sale of 1,687 real estate parcels the county took over when their owners failed to pay the property tax due on them.

The money will be distributed among the county's dozens of local government units.

Commissioners plan an additional tax sale from July 23 to 25. The Lake County treasurer usually holds another tax sale in late summer or early fall. No date has been set.

State law permits Indiana counties to recover unpaid taxes by taking ownership of the land and buildings on which the tax is due and selling them to the highest bidder.
