The House voted 68-23 to override Pence’s veto, while the Senate voted 34 to 12 to override.
The votes defied the normal political alliances, with most Democrats backing the Republican governor, and most Republicans voting to reject his veto.
Christy Denault, Pence’s communications director, said in a statement after the vote that the governor “stands by his veto, and regrets that it was not upheld by the Indiana General Assembly today. While this bill contained some positive provisions, the Governor believes that when Hoosiers pay taxes that are not owed, they should be offered relief. Hoosiers can be assured that Governor Pence and his administration will continue to put taxpayers first.”
Republicans who backed the override, though, argued that it was the veto that would have let down taxpayers. It contains various tax breaks and benefits, including for the surviving spouses of veterans, they said, while state taxpayers would have had to foot the bill for the cost of figuring out refunds to the two counties which had neglected to reauthorize their local income taxes used to pay for jails — Jackson and Pulaski.
