Daily Journal Reports Johnson County Studying Raising Taxes

From the Johnson County Daily Journal:

Most county taxpayers will likely see their tax bills go up if the state approves an increase that would help pay for a countywide emergency dispatch center.

The county is preparing to combine its four emergency dispatch centers into one by the beginning of 2015, which is required by the state for all counties. The county will be responsible for $1.8 million per year for salaries, equipment and utilities for the countywide center.

A new option is being considered to increase the county’s property tax rate in order to pay for the costs of the new countywide center. The tax increase would need to be approved by the state before it could go into effect.

County officials aren’t sure how much the increase would be or how it would affect tax bills. How much extra taxpayers could pay would depend on where they live.
