Tribune Reports Mishawaka to Vote on Abatement Request

From the South Bend Tribune:

Representatives of the Barak Group, which proposes to build 60 to 80 apartments and town homes at the northwest corner of Main Street and Mishawaka Avenue, will make a presentation to the city's Redevelopment Commission on Monday in the first step of seeking a tax abatement.

The commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall, 600 E. Third St.

The Barak Group is seeking a five-year property tax abatement at 100 percent, 95 percent, 90 percent, 85 percent and 80 percent for each successive year, according to the firm's application.

Ultimately, it will be the city council's job to approve, deny or adjust the abatement. Before that can happen, the Redevelopment Commission first must sign off on it, and it will be asked to do that Monday.

The Barak Group estimates that the project would cost $14 million to $17 million, with construction beginning one year from now. The owner, who lives in Israel and has visited the area many times, has been involved with local investment properties.
