Journal & Courier Reports Bill would allow All Taxpayers to Pay Property Taxes in Installments

From the Lafayette Journal & Courier:

Indiana landowners would soon be able to pay their property taxes in installments if a bill that unanimously passed the Indiana House this week earns Gov. Mike Pence’s signature.

Senate Bill 207 offers residents the option to make a payment plan for property taxes, rather than paying all at once.

Although this policy is new in many parts of the state, Tippecanoe County has allowed partial payments since 2009.

“It has worked well for us, and was well received by the community,” County Treasurer Bob Plantenga said. “We want everyone to pay what they are supposed to, and this makes it easier for them.”

Choosing to pay in installments does not mean homeowners won’t be penalized for late payments, Plantenga said. They will continue to be charged 5 or 10 percent extra if full payments are not submitted on time.

But if they have a payment plan set up prior to the due date, their home will not be put on the tax sale list. A tax sale is when the county sells the property to recover delinquent taxes.

SB 207 bill passed the House on Monday with a vote of 93-0 and the Senate with a vote of 48-0 in February. It was sponsored in the House by state Rep. Randy Truitt, R-West Lafayette.
