Sun-Commercial Reports Knox County Offering Electronic Tax Statements

From the Vincennes Sun-Commercial:

Property owners have a new option for receiving their property tax statements, but they’ll need to sign-up quick if they want to advantage of it.

“If they want to take advantage of it for this year’s taxes, they need to send in their registration immediately,” said county treasurer Sharon Duke. “The tax statements are going out the first of next week, so they’ll need to sign up this week at the very latest.”

Property owners can sign up by going to http://www.sri.taxpayerconnection.com.

Last week the county commissioners adopted an ordinance to allow taxpayers to choose between receiving their statements electronically or continue receiving a mailed hard copy.

The electronic property tax statements will be e-mailed to taxpayers on the same day traditional tax bills are mailed out through the U.S. Postal Service, Duke said, noting the e-bills will arrive a few days ahead of the hard copies, due to time in transit.

“Taxpayers have told us they want us to be more efficient, and this is a big step in that direction,” she explained. “By electing to receive their bills through e-mail, taxpayers will help save the county money, time and resources that we can dedicate to other things.”

The county will save 7 cents on each electronic statement send out over a mailed hard copy at 47 cents each.

Duke said state law requires that property bills be mailed at least 15 days before the May 10 due date, but Knox County generally opts to send them out around 30 days prior.

All property owners have the option to enroll in the system, even if the tax bill is paid through an escrow account by their mortgage company.
