The 2013 legislative session has finally come to a close and local legislators are expressing near universal satisfaction with its outcome.
Highlighted by a budget that saw approval of a 5 percent income tax cut — the largest in Indiana’s history — the 2013 session is drawing praise from local legislators including State Reps. Wes Culver, R-Goshen, Rebecca Kubacki, R-Syracuse, and State Sen. Carlin Yoder, R-Goshen, as one of the least contentious and most productive in recent memory.
For Culver, passage of the budget coupled with what he saw as a significant increase in bipartisanship were the highlights of the 2013 session.
“A lot of great work was done this session by every member of the General Assembly,” Culver said. “It is always great to see more money going back to taxpayers through a comprehensive tax cut package that will spur more economic growth in our state. The budget was crafted with conservative principles to keep the size and scope of government limited, while also maintaining the necessary reserves and spend levels to fund our obligations.”
Included among the bigger highlights pointed out by Culver were the elimination of the estate tax and the $215 million in annual funding earmarked for transportation and infrastructure costs.
“That’s huge because infrastructure has been a big concern,” Culver said. “This takes it up to new record high levels of funding.”
