From the Elkhart Truth:
The Elkhart County Treasurer’s Office collected almost $1 million in property taxes using a new online system.
Treasurer Larry Ernest described Thursday, the last day to turn in payments, as “normal but very hectic.” The treasurer’s office launched a new website in April that allows county residents to view and pay their tax bills online.
Online payments have been available for about four years, Ernest said, but the new website proved to be more successful. The treasurer’s office collected slightly more than $1 million in taxes online from April 1, 2011, to March 31, he said.
“I expected the new site to collect more, but I didn’t know how much more it would be,” Ernest said, adding that he fielded several questions about navigating the new website.
The next installment of property taxes are due Nov. 13.
