Lake County Council May Approve Township Funding Over Assessor's Objection

From the Northwest Indiana Times:

The Lake County Council is poised to give two township assessors $112,000 over the objection of county Assessor Hank Adams.

Council President Jerome Prince, D-Gary, said Thursday a committee of council members have agreed to give Calumet Township Assessor Jacquelyn Collins $62,000 and St. John Township Assessor Melody Kikkert $50,000 to spend on overtime and part-time employees for 2012.

The full council will meet Thursday to vote on the matter.

Adams said the council has failed to provide his office with enough financial resources to assess tens of thousands of parcels in six townships, deal with appeals from all 11 townships and provide oversight of nonprofit organizations and inheritance tax cases.

Adams objected last month to taking the money from a fund earmarked for future reassessments.

Douglas Hensley, technical director for the St. John Township assessor's office, assured the council Thursday that the work done this year will be useful for the next reassessment.
