From the Johnson County Daily Journal:
Homeowners could see their property tax bills double if they miss out on their last chance to renew a major tax deduction.
The homestead deduction, which is a tax break offered to homeowners who live in their home, reduces the value of their property that they have to pay taxes on. For example, a $150,000 home in White River Township would have a tax bill more than doubled without the credit.
About 7,000 of the county’s 38,000 homeowners are in danger of losing the deduction, and many will receive their spring tax bills for the higher amount. Tax bills are being printed this week, but the Johnson County Auditor’s Office hasn’t sent out a final notice to about 5,000 of the affected people, auditor Jan Richhart said.
