Keep an eye on your mailbox: About 65,000 property tax bills will be mailed by the Monroe County treasurer’s office Monday.
Monroe County Treasurer Cathy Smith and her staff, along with seasonal part-time employees, have been preparing tax bills for the past week to get bills ready for mailing.
“We’ve gotten — over the time Cathy’s been treasurer — we’ve gotten a lot more efficient,” said Hans Huffman, chief deputy in the Monroe County treasurer’s office. “We take pride in doing our own tax bills.”
This year, tax bills are due May 10 for the spring installment and Nov. 12 for the fall installment. Informational meetings about tax bills will be held at 5 p.m. May 8 and 9 in the treasurer’s office.
Payments can be mailed or made in person to the renovated treasurer’s office on the second floor of the Monroe County Courthouse.

Billing process starts for 2014
The Indiana Department of Local Government Finance approved the sales disclosure file, putting Monroe County on-track to have property assessments and billing completed on time for 2013 pay 2014, said Judy Sharp, county assessor.
Monroe County is one of the first nine counties in the state to have its sales disclosure approved, and it is one of the earliest approvals ever for the county, according to Sharp.
