South Bend Tribune Reports Goshen Considers Abatement Requests from Lippert Components and Dave Carter & Associates

Hundreds of new jobs may be on the verge of coming to Goshen.

Two companies are awaiting approval of seven-year tax phase-ins from Goshen City Council.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                          A hearing tonight before the council will determine whether the areas where the projects are slated meet guidelines required for tax phase-ins, such as development is slow and buildings are obsolete, Goshen Mayor Allan Kauffman said.

If approved, there will be a second hearing in a few weeks for final approval of both projects.

Here are the details:

Lippert Components Manufacturing is proposing to expand operations in Goshen at three facilities -- 2703 College Ave., 2475 Kercher Road and 1701 Century Drive.

The company currently employees 1,872 people at the three locations and would be adding an additional 376 new jobs by 2016.

The Goshen Department of Community Development is recommending a seven-year tax phase-in for personal property on the Lippert project, which the Economic Development Corp. of Elkhart County has projected will result in a personal property tax savings of nearly $485,000.

Lippert Components would still pay an estimated $295,620 in additional property taxes during the seven-year abatement period.

The cost of new manufacturing equipment for the project is $10 million.

Ocala, Fla.-based, Falcon Corp., owned and operated by Dave Carter & Associates, plans to transfer 37 jobs from its Elkhart site at 1136 Verdant Drive to a new $3.9 million facility in Goshen on Century Drive.

The Economic Development Corp. has projected the seven-year tax phase-in to result in a real property tax savings of $466,830 and a savings of $19,397 for personal property.

However, Dave Carter & Associates, would still pay an estimated $371,928 in additional property taxes over the seven-year period, according to information in tonight's agenda supplied by the Goshen Department of Community Development.
