Sun-Commercial Reports Knox County Opts Not to Send Personal Property Tax Forms

From the Vincennes Sun-Commercial:

The county assessor’s office has opted to not send out personal property tax forms this year. Typically the forms are sent out to every business owner in the county in the hope they will fill it out and return it before the May 15 deadline.

Personal property tax is a tax levied against a business owner for all the equipment in his or her possession, such as farming equipment, lawn mowers or even a hair dresser’s shampoo bowls, for example. Anything that is considered inventory, however, is not included.

Assessor Cathy Lane said most business owners’ accountants take care of providing that information to the assessor’s office in a timely manner, so the forms, for the most part, aren’t necessary.

So to save on postage, Lane has chosen this year to send out postcards reminding business owners of the pending deadline.

A penalty is imposed on those who don’t return the form, she said, although for most business owners, the tax ends up being very little money.
