Herald-Times Reports Vote on Food and Beverage Tax Delayed

A food and beverage tax in Monroe County is on the horizon, but the horizon may be further away than initially thought.

Using the schedule originally set by the Monroe County Council, a vote could be taken as early as June 11, after the second of two public hearings. However, the council asked that an agreement between the Monroe County and the city of Bloomington be put in place before a vote, and as the details of the agreement continue to be hammered out, a June 11 vote looks less likely.

“I don’t think a vote in June is going to be in the cards,” said Geoff McKim, president of the council.

The Monroe County Council will hold the first public hearing on the proposed 1 percent food and beverage tax at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Nat U. Hill Meeting Room of the Monroe County Courthouse, and if a vote is delayed, there could be even more opportunity for public comment on the tax.

“If there’s still more public comment after these, we will have the opportunity to hold more meetings,” McKim said. “As long as there are concerns, we will try to address them.”  He added that he would be willing to come speak to any group wishing to hold a public forum on the tax.
