Residents in incorporated areas of Monroe County will find a stormwater fee tacked on to their property tax bill, a fee county officials approved last year.
Even tax exempt properties, such as churches and township offices, are required to pay the fee.
“All property outside of incorporated limits that meets the criteria in the Stormwater Fee Ordinance is charged the stormwater fee regardless of whether or not taxes are owed,” said county drainage engineer Todd Stevenson. “Because there is no other countywide billing system, the fee was piggy-backed onto the tax bills to keep administrative costs down.”
The county stormwater fund will pay for services relating to runoff from rainfall and not for sanitary sewer service. Stevenson said a common misconception is that property serviced by septic systems would be exempt from the stormwater fee.
