The Herald-Times Reports on Property Tax Rates in Monroe County

From the Bloomington Herald-Times:

In 2012, properties with the highest tax rates in Monroe County are those that are both in Bean Blossom Township and within the Ellettsville town limits, at $2.4539 per $100 of assessed value. Close behind are properties in Ellettsville, Richland Township, at $2.4504 per $100. Third highest, at $2.371, property owners in areas where Bloomington city limits reach into Richland Township.

Residents of Richland and Bean Blossom townships saw big jumps in property tax rates a year ago because in November 2009, the Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corp. board approved selling two $10 million bonds for renovations and repairs to the aging junior high and high school, and the principal must be repaid.

Additionally, payments on a bond for the primary and intermediate school buildings that opened in August 2002 increased by about $300,000 in 2011, which added to tax rates a year ago.

The 15 other tax districts in Monroe County all have tax rates lower than $2 per $100 of assessed value.

The lowest tax rates in Monroe County are for residents of Washington Township, the north-central portion of the county, where the tax rate is $1.1583 per $100 of assessed value. Second lowest is Benton Township, where the rate is $1.1679 per $100.

Lots of different funds within each tax district contribute to each one’s total rate.

For example, those who own property in Bloomington Township, but outside of Bloomington, paid 23.54 cents on every $100 of value of their property toward the township’s fire department. Those who own property in Bloomington Township but within city limits don’t contribute anything toward the township’s firefighting fund, but they pay 78 cents per $100 of assessed value to pay for city services that property owners in incorporated parts of Bloomington Township don’t pay.

All property owners in Monroe County contribute 23.18 cents per $100 of assessed value to the county general fund, and 8.26 cents per $100 of assessed value to the Monroe County Public Library coffers.

Only three tax districts paid higher rates this year over last: Ellettsville properties in Richland Township and Bean Blossom Township, and properties in Salt Creek, but increases were small, at 3.63 cents, 3.57 cents and 17.9 cents, respectively, per $100 of assessed value.

Among the 15 tax units that saw a lower tax rate in 2012, property owners in unincorporated areas of Bean Blossom Township got the biggest break: 8.71 cents less per $100 of assessed value.

Public notice of tax rates for all 18 tax districts in the county and the funds that set them was published March 28, April 4 and April 11 in The Herald-Times, as required by law. The first installment of property taxes is due May 10.
