From the Greensburg Daily News:
Decatur County Treasurer Rita Burkhert is reminding local property owners that property taxes are due Tuesday, Nov. 13.
Technically, Burkhert explained, the 2012 due date is Nov. 10, but since that day falls on a Saturday, the date will be moved back to the next day in which the Decatur County Courthouse is open.
Consequently, Nov. 11 is Veteran’s Day, meaning Nov. 12 will be the official day of observance for government offices. As such, the Decatur County Courthouse is closed Nov. 12 and will reopen Nov. 13.
“We put that date on all the tax statements we mailed in April,” Burkhert said, “but we’d like to extend a final reminder so people don’t pay a penalty.”
Additionally, any mailed payment postmarked Nov. 13 or earlier will be counted as on time.
Burkhert added that residents can also pay their property tax at any Decatur County MainSource Bank location.
“You can pay your bill inside any MainSource branch or by going through the drive-thru,” she said.
Residents can also leave their payment in the drop box on the north side of the courthouse.
“Please don’t leave cash in the drop box, though,” Burkhert stressed. “Please pay with a check or money order. And be sure to include your statement with any payment. You’re also free to leave your payment in the drop box after we close at 4 p.m., Nov. 13, and there will be no penalty assessed.”
According to the treasurer, the penalty for late payment is five percent of the total bill for the first 30 days. After 30 days, the rate increases to 10 percent.
Additionally, for anyone with other existing outstanding property tax fees, the penalty rate is 10 percent from day one.
