Center Grove area residents likely would get to vote on whether they want their community to become a town if the proposal came up again after the issue has prompted a proposed change in state law.
Both houses of the Indiana General Assembly have approved legislation that would let commissioners decide whether to allow a new town government, deny a town or send the issue to a referendum.
A referendum would let residents have the final say on the issue.
State Rep. John Price’s legislation is intended to address concerns residents raised after the proposal to incorporate the Center Grove area into a town.
They often said it wasn’t fair that supporters could set up a town with only 50 signatures and the approval of at least two of three county commissioners.
